Public Works

Project manager Betty Purdie, PE of Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, works with designers and public works professionals to find new ways to solve old problems. An overpass at the edge of Brigham City, Utah offered such an opportunity. The scope called for widening the interchange overpass; however, the natural geological conditions surrounding the bridge were unstable. When settlement and global stability calculations indicated the weight of the soil embankments for the second bridge would impact the existing bridge, the plan had to be reworked…

Snowbird Ski Resort’s Hidden Peak guest services center faced unusual design challenges due to its mountaintop location.  The adjacent tram’s foundation posed possible vulnerability to backfilling with excavated soil which would potentially expose the foundation’s walls to lateral pressures.  Designers developed a structural barrier between the foundation and the mountain by filling the void with EPS Geofoam...

    It Rains Every Night

In roofing they say "It rains every night," which means at the end of the day the entire roof must be completely water tight. Commercial roofs vary greatly in terms of materials, slopes, and protrusions that must be worked around. The Maple Grove Elementary project is an example of the way designers and builders worked together to solve a ponding challenge that required a significant amount of slope to drain properly.

ACH Foam Technologies Solves the Water Absorption Equation

ACH Foam Technologies proudly announces Foam-Control® PLUS+®’s water absorption max volume results of 0.3% in laboratory testing proves that molded polystyrene insulation resists moisture absorption as well, or better than other rigid foam insulations on the market. Even more important is molded polystyrene’s ability to quickly dry after wetting conditions which results in R-value retention over the life of the building.
