R-Control SIPs Stand up to Tennessee Tornado Winds
Mac and Kim Chesley researched a lot
of products before building their two story home in Sumner County,
Tennessee. Their building site, located just outside the town of
Portland, Tennessee, is located on rolling hills surrounded mostly by
peaceful agricultural land. Their building process began over five
years ago, just after seeing an interesting building technology
described as SIPs, or Structural Insulated Panels. R-Control SIPs were
being used to construct their church and they were so impressed, they
decided to use R-Control SIPs on their own home.

Construction on their home was completed about five years ago. The house was designed as a nice two story home, done in traditional architecture. Before building their new home, the Chesleys were living in a single wide mobile home. The R-Control SIPs promised energy efficiency, and they delivered. After moving into their new R-Control home, they enjoyed lower energy bills, while increasing their living space by over two and a half times. R-Control SIPs also promised a quieter home, and it was. R-Control SIPs also promised a stronger more durable home, and until November 10th, 2002, the Chesleys had no idea how strong.
| The 2:00 AM, November 10th, 2002. Mac
and Kim were asleep in the master bedroom of their R-Control SIP House.
A loud horrific wind noise woke them from their sleep. In one big
heaving event, the house was lifted, shifted and then set down
suddenly. What they didn’t know in the dark was that their R-Control
house was hit by winds associated with tornados that were striking
Tennessee. Most importantly - they were OK. Aside from the R-Control
SIP house being lifted and shifted by the tornado, the house had
survived intact, with apparently very little damage.light of the next day made it
clear what had happened in the night darkness.
The R-Control SIP house
had been buffeted by tornado winds, that were later confirmed by the
National Weather Service to be over 200 miles an hour in the immediate
area of the house. The R-Control SIP house held strongly together. So
strong in fact, that the house stood up to the damaging winds, while
the cement block foundation failed. The only damage to the house was a
few loose roof shingles and two broken windows.

The Chesleys plan to build again on their peaceful Tennessee acreage. Due to the fact that their R-Control SIP house held together during the tornado, all of their personal items survived, protected from the scattering winds and damaging rains of the storm. All of the appliances, plumbing fixtures, cabinets and the like will be used in the new house construction. The Chesleys now know first hand that the promises made by R-Control SIPs about strength and durability are true. And of course, they plan to use R-Control SIPs.
| About R-Control SIPS: They are made
with a rigid core of solid Perform Guard termite resistant EPS
structurally laminated between two engineered skins of structural rated
OSB. The R-Control SIP composite forms a strong beam like plate that
can be made in single piece sizes up to 8’ x 24’. The Perform Guard EPS
cores are treated with a safe inorganic mineral that helps to resist
termite infestation of the R-Control SIP. R-Control SIPs are use to
build structural insulated walls, roofs, ceilings and floors. R-Control
SIPs build exceptionally fast, are stronger and more durable then other
building techniques and provide superior comfort and energy savings.
R-Control SIPs are used to build production and custom homes, as well
as light commercial buildings. |

R-Control SIPs have been available for building in the US, Canada, Japan and other parts of the world since 1985 from AFM R-Control Building Systems.
